Autumn on Etna

Two days of foliage, woodlands, and love stories

On November 14th and 15th, we look forward to two days of hiking, exploring the diverse environments of the volcano: from the birch forests near the Sartorius craters, where we will admire one of the most iconic botanical features of Etna, to the chestnut and holm oak woods surrounding Monte Ilice.

The weekend will also be an opportunity to experience the region through its stories. On the second day, we will follow in the footsteps of Giovanni Verga with a theatrical itinerary led by actress Maria Rita Sgarlato, visiting the locations tied to his novel Storia di una capinera.

To complete the experience, we will spend the night in Trecastagni and enjoy a dinner dedicated to local traditional flavors, sharing not just the trail, but the pleasure of being together.

Day-by-day programme

Day 1 Saturday 14 November

Among the colors of the birches

Our first day takes us to the northeastern slope of Etna, near the Sartorius craters, along a route immersed in the colors of autumn foliage.

We will walk through a forest of Etna birch (Betula aetnensis), an endemic species that defines these volcanic landscapes and offers particularly striking hues in autumn. Here, nature meets the history of eruptions, amidst woodland paths, lava flows, and landscapes shaped by the volcano's power.

At the end of the hike, we will head to Trecastagni for our overnight stay. The evening will be dedicated to conviviality and local flavors, with a dinner featuring traditional regional products.

Meeting point

Saturday, November 14th, at 09:00 AM in Milo, Via Etnea, in front of the Church of Sant’Andrea.

Day 2 Sunday 15 November

In the settings of Storia di una capinera

The second day offers a different experience, where hiking meets literature and theatre.

We will start by crossing holm oak and chestnut woods, in an environment that retains all the charm of an Etna autumn, to reach Monte Ilice. Here, we will take part in a theatrical itinerary presented by actress Maria Rita Sgarlato, who will guide us on a journey through the places and atmospheres described by Giovanni Verga.

It will be an opportunity to rediscover Storia di una capinera through a narrative that weaves together landscape and literature, retracing the locations linked to the protagonist's story and her discovery of love.

After the theatrical experience, we will continue our hike along a different route, crossing new vistas of the Etna landscape until we complete our journey.

End of the hike

Approximately 4:30 PM in Trecastagni

Important notes

The itinerary may change in the event of adverse natural conditions: in that case an alternative route will be proposed. A few days before the hike you will receive a message with the latest useful information.

Registration closes on November 12th or once the group is full.
