Wandering the Iblei: The Comeback.
Just as every journey begins with a single step, today we embark on a beautiful new adventure: The Comeback, Giarratana – Buccheri. This is the first stage of a grand loop that, for us hikers, represents a path through some of the most stunning hills in Southern Italy. Our first steps will be taken from Giarratana, starting from this charming mountain village. Before the 1693 earthquake, its name was Cerretanum Jarratanae, and its ancient settlement, now known as Terravecchia, stood near Monte Lauro. Following the 1693 earthquake, which leveled the entire Val di Noto and claimed 541 lives, the new Giarratana was rebuilt further south on the slopes of a lovely hill called “Poju di li ddisi”. The new Giarratana was officially born on August 26, 1693.
The woods of Buccheri will be our next passage, home to the largest forest expanse in the province of Siracusa. These woodlands are interconnected, forming a vast forest that embraces the town of Buccheri and its Iblean heights. We will reach the summit of Monte Lauro and skirt the woods of Contessa and Santa Maria, located to the south and north of Monte Lauro, respectively. This area is primarily covered by various species of pine. Once we arrive in Buccheri, we will say our goodbyes, looking forward to the next stage of our comeback: Buccheri – Vizzini.

Highlights: The story of a journey immersed in the traditions and wonderful nature of the Iblei.
Required equipment: Hiking clothing, small backpack, hiking boots, trekking poles, hat, sweater, waterproof jacket, and 1.5 liters of water.
