Cava Lazzaro

Cava Lazzaro is one of the many canyons that carve through south-eastern Sicilia, forming the upper section of the so-called Cava Grande di Rosolini, located just a few kilometers from the town of the same name. The canyon takes its name from an immense natural cavity, also known as Grotta Lazzaro, which was inhabited during prehistoric times and the Bronze Age. Already explored by Baron Ferdinand Von Andrian towards the end of the 19th century, it is the source of the enigmatic "ossi a globuli" (globular bones), interpreted as knife handles. Beyond its natural beauty, the area is historically and archaeologically significant, having been inhabited almost continuously over time. On the southern slope lies the famous Tomb of the Prince, which boasts a monumental facade carved into the rock, featuring eight faux semi-pillars with engravings of double fishbones, dotted discs, and triangles.

Route: approx. 6 hours of walking including lunch – dirt tracks, mule tracks, and both marked and unmarked trails.
Required equipment: trekking clothing, small backpack, k-way (rain jacket), hiking boots, waterproof jacket, hat, sweater, 1.5 liters of water.
