Ragusa Upside Down

This is a loop trail starting on foot from Ragusa Ibla (Largo San Paolo). Once we reach the S. Leonardo stream, we will follow it until we arrive at an old water mill. After crossing the stream, we will reach the plateau by following an ancient mule track. From this plateau, we will overlook the Cava della Misericordia: it is impossible not to be struck by the silence and the sense of peace that pervades the valley. Nature is slowly reclaiming what was once taken from it; vegetation has already covered many structures, including numerous mills where the "massari" (local farmers) from the plateau once came to grind their wheat. From here, we will reach the "hermitage" where we will stop for lunch. After lunch, we will climb back up the canyon and continue towards c./da Celone, one of the largest hypogean cemeteries in the province, dating back to the Byzantine period. Along the way, we will visit the small Byzantine-era rock-hewn church of "Santo Liu," which contains the remains of a stone altar and traces of frescoes. Santo Liu was considered the Saint of rain and was carried in procession during prolonged periods of drought. Descending along the side of the stream, we will arrive at the S. Leonardo canyon and climb back up to the Rotonda, our starting point.

Itinerary: marked and unmarked trails, forest tracks, and old mule paths (trazzere).

Difficulty: challenging.
Required equipment: hiking clothing, small backpack, hiking boots, trekking poles, hat, sweater, waterproof jacket, and 1.5 liters of water.
