"U Sentieru re Pirriatura" - Ragusa

Along the Irmino valley between Ragusa and Modica, there lies a wonderful and enchanting place, marked by the toil of the people who shaped its history. Leaving our cars behind, we will immediately dive into a full immersion along the historic Ragusa trazzere (ancient mule tracks) bordered by magnificent dry-stone walls. We will reach the bed of the Irminio river, crossing it via an original limestone bridge. Shortly after, the highlight of today's excursion will open up before us: the “pirrere a cielo aperto” (open-air stone quarries). We will be literally surrounded by mountains of stone—the remnants of extraction activities that continued until the 1950s. It’s not just about mines, though… as this is a loop trail, the return journey will be characterized by the constant enjoyment of the panoramas seen from the passage of Cava Manca and Cozzo Streppenosa. The ascent back to the starting point will take us first along the river and then up an old Ragusa mule track, in one of the most beautiful spots connecting the two Iblei municipalities.

Loop trail: approximately 5 hours of walking; dirt road, marked and unmarked paths.
Travel: own car.
Difficulty: challenging.
Necessary equipment: trekking clothing, k-way, small backpack, hiking boots, hat, waterproof jacket, sweater, and 1.5 liters of water.
