Argimusco and Bosco di Malabotta Trekking - ME

November 27/28, 2021
Join us for a weekend trekking adventure through forests, megaliths, and a visit to the charming village of Montalbano Elicona. Beyond the village, the surroundings of Montalbano Elicona offer visitors a truly unique spectacle. Among the most fascinating historical and natural sites is the Argimev138-1.jpgusco plateau, often called the “Sicilian Stonehenge.” Located about 6km from the town center and nestled within the Bosco di Malabotta Nature Reserve, the site is famous for its massive sandstone blocks shaped into the most bizarre forms. An eagle, a lion, a skull, a warrior, a praying goddess, a high priest—zoomorphic and anthropomorphic profiles sculpted by nature have led generations of curious minds to imagine astronomical connections or mysterious alchemical correspondences among the rocks. In the absence of official studies, the most popular theory regarding the Megaliti di Montalbano comes from Professor Gaetano Pantano. According to this local history enthusiast, the Argimusco represents a sort of astronomical calendar. These enormous limestone boulders (megaliths), eroded by wind and rain into various shapes, have captured the imagination of both locals and scholars due to their resemblance to the dolmens and menhirs around which Celtic peoples once celebrated their religious rites.
