"U Sentieru Re Pirriatura" - Ragusa

Along the Irminio valley between Ragusa and Modica, there lies a wonderful and enchanting place, marked by the toil of the people who shaped its history. Leaving our cars behind, we will immediately immerse ourselves in the historic Ragusa trazzere (ancient mule tracks) bordered by magnificent dry-stone walls. We will reach the bed of the Irminio river and cross it using an original limestone bridge. Shortly after, the destination of today's excursion will open up before us: the “pirrere a cielo aperto” (open-air stone quarries). We will be literally surrounded by mountains of stone: the remnants of extraction activities that continued until the 1950s. It’s not just about mines, though… the return journey, as this is a loop trail, will be characterized by the continuous enjoyment of the views from the passage of Cava Manca and Cozzo Streppenosa. The ascent back to the starting point will take us first along the river and then up an old Ragusa mule track, in one of the most beautiful spots where these two Iblei municipalities meet.

Difficulty: suitable for regular hikers.
