Canyoning with Salvo Marletta

The Iblei limestone plateau is deeply carved by profound valleys, true canyons known as “cave”, and among the most interesting and spectacular is undoubtedly the Cava Grande del Cassibile. Throughout the Iblei, there is arguably no other environment of such dramatic and wild natural beauty. Sheer cliffs, at times covered in pristine vegetation, at others rocky, with the cluster of "Dieri" (prehistoric cave dwellings) taking center stage. At the bottom of the canyon flows the Cassibile river, fed by many small springs along its course, featuring small waterfalls and wide pools perfect for swimming—an unusual environment for Sicilia. Our route winds through this scenery and includes trekking upstream in the water for about two kilometers.

Meeting point: Sunday, August 26 at 09:15 AM along the S.S. 287 Palazzolo Acreide/Siracusa at the Esso gas station, heading towards Siracusa on the right side.
End of excursion: Sunday, August 26 at 6:00 PM in Palazzolo Acreide (SR).
Loop trail: approximately 6 hours of walking (including swimming breaks), 250m elevation gain. The trail passes through rugged areas with brambles and the riverbed.
Travel: own car
Difficulty: moderate
Required equipment: trekking clothing, backpack, hiking boots, hat, closed-toe water shoes, swimsuit, 1.5 liters of water.
