Marineo & Occhiolà - Nature and History (Grammichele)

November 04, 2018
Our walk begins with an excursion into the Marineo woods, where we will follow a trail along the panoramic valley leading to Licodia. This area is characterized by a diverse mix of soils, shaped by various factors: gypsum, volcanic sand, clay, and limestone gravel. As we walk the first part of the trail, we will have the chance to observe volcanic rock up close, allowing us to appreciate and understand the origins of this wonderful place. We will continue with a stop at an ancient masseria (traditional farmhouse); a place where silence blends with a landscape rich in ancient history. After our lunch break, we will head to the archaeological site of Occhiolà:
“The year 1693 began with a catastrophe that brought destruction across Eastern Sicily, permanently altering the morphology and structure of several cities of the time; one of these was Occhiolà.”
The site will lead you to discover enchanted places and spectral landscapes where nature has taken its course, and where humanity found itself unprepared in the face of such immense force and power.
For this event, we will be accompanied on our visit to the site by archaeologist Irene Novello, a member of the non-profit organization Terravecchia. We will enjoy a medium-difficulty hike, crossing roads and trails between the municipalities of Mineo and Grammichele—an ideal setting for a trek far from urban centers, immersed in nature amidst gentle autumn landscapes.
