The Three Hills Tour - Monte Casale

For a hiker, spending time outdoors in the heart of nature brings a sense of harmony to the mind. And our mental harmony, in turn, benefits our body. This new experience will be a give-and-take between us, nature, and the surrounding landscapes. These are places where walking becomes history, where history leaves its mark; the traces of the past are now the paths we walk today. We had the idea of connecting the highest peaks of the Iblei in three stages, starting from the lowest of the three, Monte Arcibessi, passing through Monte Casale, and concluding with Monte Lauro. We will have the chance to discover, in the most “natural” way, places where nature, history, traditions, local populations, and agriculture are inextricably fused. In this context, there is nothing more to add, except that across the Iblei, every single stone—from the highest peak, Monte Lauro, down to the Monti Climiti—tells a story of the hard work and traditional crafts of our area.

Fee: € 10.00 for a single session or € 25.00 if you sign up for all three stages. Includes guide service, RCT insurance, and organization.
Costs do not include: packed lunch and fuel expenses for travel.
Travel: own car.
Lunches: packed.
Loop trails: approx. 5 hours of walking, forest tracks, marked and unmarked paths.
Difficulty: medium.
Required equipment: hiking clothing, small backpack, k-way (rain jacket), hiking boots, hat, sweater, waterproof jacket, 1.5 liters of water.

November 05, 2017 – MONTE ARCIBESSI
The walk along this hill will wind through ancient trazzere (traditional shepherd paths) that led from the summit to the “ciuse” (enclosed fields), places of work, trade, and expansion. We will traverse an ideological path from the Iblei niviere (ancient snow pits) and the “Ciccio Pecora” tunnels before returning to our starting point at the highest part of the hill. We will complete a loop trail of about 5 hours with a medium level of difficulty. Equipment and clothing should be typical for an autumn hike.
Meeting point: Sunday 05/11/2017 at 09:00 AM - At the junction to the left between the turnoff for Monterosso Almo on the SP10 Ragusa-Chiaramonte Gulfi road and the Antica Stazione restaurant.
End of hike: 04:30 PM at the same starting point.

November 19, 2017 – MONTE CASALE
History teaches us that sometimes nothing lasts forever; even the sturdiest walls crumble before the power of nature. This is, in short, what happened to the village that once stood here: Kasmene. The remains and ruins still present in some sections recall the passage of an ancient population. Today's walk will have this place as its backdrop, and we will delight our hiker spirits with fascinating passages and natural landscapes. We will complete a loop trail of about 5 hours with a medium level of difficulty. Equipment and clothing should be typical for an autumn hike.

December 17, 2017 – MONTE LAURO
Volcanoes, with their immense power, have always fascinated people. Monte Lauro, with its gentle slopes, is part of an underwater volcanic complex. Known as the peak par excellence of the Iblei, it holds treasures of ancient history within its territory. Its beauty, beyond the natural, lies in the charm of still-pristine places and stories lived long ago. Through a loop trail, we will have the chance to spend a healthy day immersed in the Iblei nature, contemplating our autumn-winter landscape. We will complete a loop trail of about 5 hours with a medium level of difficulty. Equipment and clothing should be typical for an autumn hike.
