Cammino Errante sugli Iblei - 5th Stage - Buccheri - Giarratana

The woods of Buccheri represent the largest forest area in the province of Siracusa; they are interconnected in one way or another, forming a vast forest that surrounds the town of Buccheri and its Iblei heights. We will hike towards Giarratana, leaving the pine forest of Monte Lauro behind. This woodland is largely state-owned and serves as an extension of the Contessa and Santa Maria woods, located south and north of Monte Lauro, respectively. This area is predominantly covered by various species of pine.
Before the 1693 earthquake, Giarratana was known as Cerretanum Jarratanae, with its ancient settlement now called Terravecchia, near Monte Lauro. Following the 1693 earthquake, which leveled the entire Val di Noto and claimed 541 lives, the new Giarratana was rebuilt further south, on the slopes of a charming hill called “Poju di li ddisi”. The new Giarratana was officially born on August 26th, 1693. For this travel experience, each participant will be provided with a small booklet to collect a stamp from each arrival town—a small gift to encourage you on your magical “cammino errante sugli Iblei”.
Upon arrival at each stage, we will always have a little surprise for you to enjoy together.

Meeting point: Sunday at 09:00 AM, Piazza Roma - Buccheri.
End of excursion: 05:00 PM, Giarratana.
Stage details: walking time: 6 hours - elevation gain 180 m uphill, 430 m downhill.
Difficulty: moderate, approx. 15 km
Lunch: packed.
Equipment: required: trekking clothing, small backpack, k-way (rain jacket), hiking boots, waterproof jacket, hat, sweater, 1.5 liters of water.
Route: Forest track, mule track, royal sheep track (regia trazzera), marked and unmarked trails.
