Wandering the Iblei - Stage 1 - Chiaramonte G. - Monterosso A.
February 05, 2017
The idea behind this trail connecting these mountain towns in the Iblei was born from the realization that, while they may seem distant, they are deeply linked by history, culture, traditions, and folklore. We want to take you on a journey through ancient crafts and old trazzere (traditional mule tracks), where our grandparents' lives were defined by working the land and the toil required to make a living, even with just a few goods.
Our walk ideologically unites lands of ancient conquests and fierce battles, where various dominations have left us with historical remnants of culture and religion. We want to show how our lands are all connected by the history of the volcano located at M.te Lauro, from which, over the centuries, the slow flow of rivers carved out our beloved Iblei cave (canyons).
The first stage of this wonderful journey will lead us from Chiaramonte Gulfi, crossing trails, royal mule tracks, and forest roads until we reach Monterosso Almo. The highlight of this adventure will be walking through and enjoying the Iblei landscape: Cava Fico, “U Dammusazzu”, Casa Bardaro, and Case Canalazzo are just some of the places that will accompany us on this first leg. The day will conclude in the historic center of Monterosso Almo, after climbing the ancient stone stairs once used by farmers returning from the surrounding countryside.
For this travel experience, each participant will be provided with a small booklet to collect a stamp from each arrival town—a little keepsake to encourage you on your magical “wandering the Iblei” journey.
Upon arrival at each stage, we will always have a little surprise for you to enjoy together.
